“He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant--not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life …” 2 Corinthians 3:6 (NIV)

“Goodnight Minister Burrows”, he said as I walked toward the sanctuary.

I winced, annoyed with the security officer at my church who insists on calling...

I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I'd really prefer to reserve that title for the obsessively clean, the compulsively neat, or those who have their clothing color-coded and organized according to the seasons. I am none of those, but what I do, and how I think, are most certainly a version of perfectionism.

I don'...

One day when I was about five years old I burst into the room to tattletale on my brother when I was stopped by a strange man with mother. The words "Get out" startled me and I ran out of the room. Later on that night my ' daddy' hit my mother with a chair.

Who is my father?  What is a father is the more accurate ques...

I find it beyond ironic that just when I had to write a piece on creativity, my words left. They packed their bags and hurried away en masse leaving just enough stragglers so I wouldn’t be embarrassed as I bumbled through my days.

Have you ever experienced that zombie-like state that exists when you lose the ability to...

Genesis 32:28 “And he said , your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel for you have struggled with God and with  men, and have prevailed.”

You know the Kool-Aid in the tin that has the sugar already in; all that’s left to do is add water? Well, the water just ruined it, so as a kid I skipped that one and on...

Do you think women in the Bible struggled over the way their bodies looked? I wonder.

Surely there were different body types even then. But we seem to have taken this weight thing to a whole new level.

Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, most people probably wouldn't call me fat (certainly not to my face). But I’...

Thank you for subscribing to the The Journey! I had a vision for this site many years ago, and I am so happy to see it realized. I'm grateful to every writer that makes the time and gives such tremendous effort to telling their stories and lessons of faith and sharing them with our readers. I firmly believe in the powe...

Growing up under the generous wings of my grandmother’s fierce and protective love is one of my childhood treasures.  Here on the island she taught me so many things, like how to catch a bus, 'sweep' the yard, and wash clothes on the scrub board. She also taught me how to call on the name of the Lord, and I mean that l...

I didn’t have an appointment, but asked to see her anyway. I’d arrived early, before the bank opened, hoping to be the first person she met with. Less than an hour later, we sat across from each other, strangers. She was just a contact name on my monthly banking statement, someone I had never met, but there we were, fa...

“That’s enough!” I said to the Father, as if I were in any position to give directions or advice to The Almighty. I said it without thinking. I was just so overwhelmed with emotion that I couldn’t feel anything but frustration. I watched my client of several years looking frail as she acknowledged through tired eyes, t...
